Opowiadając historię, łączysz trzy czasy: Past Simple (kolejne wydarzenia), Past Continuous (tło) i Past Perfect (coś jeszcze wcześniejszego).
Zasady
Past Simple
II forma
Główne wydarzenia, jedno po drugim.
Past Continuous
was / were + -ing
Tło, czynność w trakcie, którą coś przerwało.
Past Perfect
had + III forma
Wcześniejsza z dwóch przeszłych czynności („zaprzeszłość”).
Past Perfect Continuous
had been + -ing
Jak długo coś trwało przed innym momentem w przeszłości.

- I was having dinner when he called. — Jadłem kolację, kiedy zadzwonił.
- By the time we arrived, the film had already started. — Zanim dotarliśmy, film już się zaczął.
- She was tired because she had been working all day. — Była zmęczona, bo pracowała cały dzień.
- I was walking home when I realised I had forgotten my keys. — Szedłem do domu, kiedy zdałem sobie sprawę, że zapomniałem kluczy.
- While I was cooking, the kids were watching TV. — Kiedy gotowałem, dzieci oglądały telewizję. (dwie czynności w tle)
- When I got to the office, the meeting had finished. — Kiedy dotarłem do biura, spotkanie było już po.
Uwaga na błędy
