„Can” ma tylko dwie formy (can, could). Wszędzie indziej używasz „be able to”. May i might wyrażają „może, być może”.
Zasady
Umiejętność teraz / w przeszłości. Could — także uprzejma prośba.
Zastępuje „can” w innych czasach. Jednorazowy sukces w przeszłości: was able to / managed to (nie could!).
Przypuszczenie ok. 50% lub mniej. May — także formalne pozwolenie.
Logiczny wniosek o TERAZ: na pewno / na pewno nie.
Przykłady
W kontekście: Gdzie jest Marek?
Marek isn't answering. He might still be in the meeting.
He can't be — the meeting finished an hour ago.
Then he must be driving. Could you text him?
Sure. If he doesn't reply, we may have to start without him.
I hope he'll be able to join us later.
Typowe błędy
Po „will” nie może stać „can”.
Przypuszczenie o przyszłości → may / might.
Wniosek „na pewno nie” → can't.
